Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome - According to the Merck Manual
Chronic Fatigue Syndrome is a condition that has no proven
physical or psychological cause characterised by long standing
severe and debilitating fatigue.
However it may a be a combination of both physiological and
psychological mechanisms working in unison predisposing and
perpetuating the condition in individuals according to a recent
review published in the American Journal of Psychiatry.
50% of chronic fatigue patients have a history of a viral
infection such as Epstein-barr virus, Ross River Fever and the
Human Herpes Virus which are implicated as a possible
cause.
Diagnosis is determined after a person has experienced
debilitating fatigue that has persisted for at 6 months
affecting daily life worsening with exertion and stress
additionally being a diagnosis of exclusion. A patient may
experience a number of symptoms associated with Chronic Fatigue
Syndrome yet no two patients may be the same.
These symptoms can vary from sleep disturbances, food
allergies/intolerances, altered bowel function, poor
detoxification of chemicals/toxins, and nutritional imbalances
and deficiencies.
There are currently no medical tests that can diagnose Chronic
Fatigue Syndrome and is determined on the basis of the
presenting symptoms.
The modern medical approaches to the condition are from the
psychological and physical using anti-depressants in
conjunction with a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs or
additional treating symptom.
The Natural Medicine Approach
The aim is to assist the body restoring any mineral and vitamin
imbalances and improve cellular energy through specific
supplements such as CoQ10, Acetyl-L-Carnitine and Lipoic Acid.
We also use specialised homeopathic remedies to aid the body
should a history of viral infections be implicated. The body is
a finely tuned organism and when it is out of balance it is
important to remove all the obstacles to healing from poor
nutrition, allergies and the body’s natural detoxification
mechanisms.
